Munich Macabre (Private Tour)

A unique hands-on historical and archaeological tour in English.

There is more to Munich than beer, pretzels and lederhosen. Beneath the veneer of a modern European city is another Munich, remote – and yet still here, within touching distance, if you know where to find it…

This is not a ghost tour – all the events – every single bone-crunching last one of them – actually happened.

Join Hans von Spanker  for a (sometimes irreverent) look at:

The Black Death and other nasties

Hans a happy bugger

Hans von Spanker and his impressive weapon

Medieval architecture and defences

Infamous witch trials

Why was beer so important? Try an authentic medieval brew

Everyday life – class, trade, the guilds

In addition you will learn about:

Medieval Jewish life

Ancient burial rites

The hidden messages on gravestones

Traditions and folklore

Why and how are archaeological digs carried out? What can we learn from the buried past?

Why bother with archaeology? Get the low-down on why and how we dig with anecdotes from a veteran archaeologist

Cost?: €240 – up to 5 adults*. Includes beer samples

Groups of 6 or more – Price on application.

Booking is required, ideally at least two weeks before your intended visit.

Concessions (max of 2 per group) of €5 given to students (of any age) seniors (65 and over) and serving or ex-military and first responders.

How long? Give yourself about 3 hours. We don´t watch the clock like hawks. 3 hours seems a long time but we generally take a break along the way.

Where? We start and finish at the Fish Fountain, located on the right-hand side of the New Town Hall in Marienplatz. Look for your costumed guide holding a sign with your name on it.

Interested in booking this tour? Send us an email with your preferred date(s) and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

Notes:

Unlike some companies, Dark History only use  guides who know their business. The guides have not read a script and this tour is the product of (ongoing) scholarly research.

This tour covers topics such as religious and social intolerance. In the same way that our 3rd Reich tours are not an endorsement of the murderous policies of that regime, the discussion of the historical rights and wrongs of this or that religion should not be taken as the attitude or personal view of the guide towards those religions today. To be be blunt, Munich was and remains a very Catholic city; much was done in the past in the name of faith which today is reprehensible. We have, thankfully moved on somewhat and now live in more enlightened times.

Some of the content of this tour is not suitable for very young children or those of a sensitive disposition. However, as a private tour, we are flexible and swap and change what we cover if needs be.

Autumn and Winter in Munich can be cold; please dress appropriately. On particularly cold days we’ll bring some mulled wine (alcohol free for the kids).

*Adults; in this context, 16 years and up. 16 is also the drinking age for beer in Germany. We try small samples, not full beers. To avoid awkwardness, if you or your child are not partaking, please let us know at the time of booking. If possible, we will provide an alternative.

We sample at least one authentic Medieval beer which may contain wheat or another potential allergen for some. If you have any doubts or worries concerning this, please mention it during the booking process and we will give you a full break down on the ingredients.

Should you have any questions regarding suitability or content, please do not hesitate to ask by dropping us an email.
